Replacing your windows comes with numerous benefits. You can lower energy costs, improve home safety, increase ventilation and improve natural lighting. Of course, new windows are also aesthetically pleasing and can boost your home’s curb appeal. But they’re a big project, and homeowners want to know what to expect. Their biggest question? “How much does a window replacement cost?”
At Your Window Solutions, we get it! Most people need to budget and save to get the high-quality custom window installations they deserve, and we’re here to help!
Unfortunately, the answer to the question on replacement window prices isn’t so easily answered. Every quote will be different because it involves different things. However, we’ve detailed seven of the most significant things homeowners must consider when figuring out how much their project will cost. Understanding the factors that go into pricing can help give you a better idea of what to expect. In the meantime, you can also learn more about our windows by clicking the button below.
1. Location
The cost of window installation (and the window itself) can vary significantly from one geographical region to another. Of course, our Illinois customers won’t have to worry about these fluctuations because they’ll be paying Illinois prices. However, our readers from other areas could see a big difference. For example, new windows cost less in West Virginia than in California.
To determine the average cost in your area, start with an online search. You should be able to estimate average costs by looking at a handful of companies near you. If they don’t have prices listed, call for a quote.
A second option to determine your region’s average cost of window replacement is to go to your local hardware store. Find the exact window type you’re looking for and take down the prices of a couple of different brands. Then, add 15% on top of that for labor costs.
For example, if you find the window you want with the lowest price of $450, you’d add 15% or $67.50 to the total and come up with $517.50. Then, you’ll find the most expensive window you want in the hardware store, which, we’ll say (for this example) costs $700. Add 15% or $105 to that to get your total of $805. So, the windows you want cost between $517.50 and $805 in your region.
But please remember that these are only ways to get an average estimate. This doesn’t include anything specific to your home or chosen contractor. But if you’re just in the thinking stage of your project, these methods can be helpful.
2. Window Type
You could choose from many window types in your home, but each will cost differently. For example, bay window replacement costs will be vastly different from picture windows or awning windows. But why is there a significant cost difference in window types?
Each type of window comes in different sizes and has different features. They have different ways of opening and closing and require different installation methods. Not only does this affect the cost of materials, but it can also increase labor time, which also increases costs.
If you’re choosing a non-standard window type, the challenge of sourcing materials can increase prices. For example, we install shape windows in arcs, ovals, pentagons, trapezoids and more. These unique windows provide a bit of personality to any room they’re installed in. However, they can sometimes be more challenging to source and install, so they may cost a little more than standard windows.
3. Economy
No matter where you live or the window type you choose, the current economy will play a factor in what you pay. According to the Consumer Price Index, the costs of everything can vary significantly from one year to the next. For example, the cost of shelter was at a 3.3% inflation increase in January 2016. But, only a few years later, in January 2024, it’s at a 6% inflation increase. While that may not sound like much, it can make a big difference.
The Consumer Price Index doesn’t track window or home improvement costs specifically. But shelter is the nearest category tracked. If we look at the example in factor one, the cheapest windows were $450. If that price is theoretically economically inflated by 6%, then material costs go up to $477 and labor increase to $71.55, for a total of $548.55. This is an increase of $31.05.
The average home has about eight windows in it. If you were to replace all your home’s windows in this example, inflation would add $248.40 to your total.
The takeaway here? Sometimes, things outside anyone’s control, like inflation, will affect window prices. Often, these prices go up slowly but steadily year over year. Rarely, there may be a year when inflation drops. If you’re planning a big project like full home window replacement, you may want to monitor the economy.
4. Glass Type
Just as the window type can affect the average cost of window replacement, so can the glass type. Thankfully, there are fewer glass types than window types – but most homeowners would still be shocked at how many different types there are. A few examples include:
- Standard single pane
- Standard double pane
- Single glaze
- Double glaze
- Safety glass (rarely used in homes)
- Tinted glass
- Acrylic glass
- Float glass
- Laminated glass
Most homes will use standard options like single and double pane and single or double glaze. While it’s unlikely that you’ll use (or want to use) the numerous alternative options, it isn’t entirely unheard of and bears mentioning.
It would be challenging to go over all the glass types in detail. However, we can shed a little light on the subject that applies to most homes. Single pane windows will cost less than double pane windows. Single glaze windows will cost less than double glaze. However, remember that the “double” versions will offer more benefits that are generally worth the extra costs.
5. Labor Costs
We mentioned above that labor costs are generally about 15%. However, they can be a little higher or lower, depending on the company you choose. Typically, companies who charge a little higher tend to be more qualified and have more experience. This means they can accomplish more complex or extensive jobs.
Labor costs can also vary throughout the year because demand increases or decreases. For example, you’ll likely pay higher labor costs during spring and summer when most people want to replace their windows. But labor costs will likely be lower in fall and winter because there’s less demand.
Not every company charges for labor based on a percentage, either. Some charge hourly rates or flat costs for labor. The only real way to determine how this will affect your total cost is to contact companies directly and receive quotes.
6. Number of Windows
The number of windows you hope to replace can significantly increase project costs. Using our same example of $450 (which we’ll remind you is not a real number, but one we’ve chosen at random), getting two windows replaced would be $900. But getting eight windows replaced would be $3,600.
But many companies offer discounts if you get multiple windows done simultaneously. The reason for these discounts? Well, there are a few.
Many window companies receive discounts on materials when they order in bulk for large projects. Plus, they’re already at your home working and can seamlessly go from one window to the next. This takes away transportation time and set-up time between windows. In many cases, it also cuts down on cleaning time. The time saved by companies means more “straight work” hours in a day, which can increase their profits.
However, it should be noted that companies usually only offer discounts on projects of three or more windows. They’re also not likely to offer discounts on custom work or projects that require significant additional labor costs. Talk to your contractor or project manager to determine what, if any, offers are available and whether your specific project qualifies for them.
7. Additional Work Needed
Some window projects are as easy as removing the old one and replacing it with a new, identical one with zero complications. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case and additional work is often needed.
For example, you may need wall construction done if you’re changing the shape or size of your windows, such as when making the transition from standard double-hung windows to bay windows. This can significantly increase the cost of your project. But, if you work with our team, we’ll ensure you know about any additional costs ahead of time so you’re never unaware of the final expenses.
